Jean McCarter is a member of crossroad Stitchers, which is a non profit organization who makes all the quilts each year for the Veterans Honor Flight program in May. This group makes 90 quilts each year, size 40 x 40, and gives each Veteran one as they return home from their honor flight. There are only a few members who quilt in Crossroad Stitchers, so this has become too big of a job for these few to do without help. Jean is asking for members of Ladies of the Lakes if there are some who might be interested in making Patriotic quilts to donate? The supplies would all be supplied. We need your sewing talent. This group is most likely going to close unless more man power becomes available. See Jean with questions or more information should you be interested. Thank you.

SUNSHINE CLUB
|
Thank you to our sunshine club coordinator, Michelle Lay, and her members for their happy smiles and greeting at our meeting. Please don't forget that they have forms at the back table for communicating information to them about any news you would like celebrated and/or shared. This month Michelle's team sent a sympathy card to Sharon Snyder for the passing of her granddaughter.

New year for Fat Quarters! This month's fat quarter drawing is Strawberries. Bring in a fat quarter, and if your ticket is drawn, you go home with a fat quarter bundle. See Diane Bishop at the back table to turn in your fat quarter(s). Next month's fat quarter is: Pots of gold/gold in the fabric

Second Saturday Class News!
|
If you missed the Block of the Month kickoff this last Saturday you missed a great time. Donna did a fabulous job of setting everything up. However, if you still want to participate, don't despair, you can catch up at the meeting. donna will have a station set up for you to get the info you need.
|
|
Next month because of the Sewing Expo, we won't be having Second Saturday Sew day but we will resume in April with Jacqui Anderson teaching a tote bag.
|

Spring Retreat 2026
Deadline for payment for our Spring Retreat is the February meeting. You can bring a check to the meeting or you can send a check to me, Kimberly Boothe, 5106 Dorman Road, Lakeland, FL. 33813. The theme for this year is American Beauties. We will be celebrating quilts in America. Total cost for the retreat is $475 for double room and $635 for single room.

QUILTING AT THE LIBRARY

Our first class was last week and wow what a great time we had. We have 8 students and we started a strippy quilt. Betty Knosalla and Sharon Monteith graciously donated their time and assisted and were amazing. This is a seven week class on Monday afternoons from 3-5 and goes to March 23. Think of it as quilting 101. Kimberly is teaching the class but there is still time to assist in the class. If you are interested, there will be a sign up sheet at the back table.

DAYTONA AQS BUS TRIP
|
I am truly sorry to announce that our Bus trip to the Daytona AQS show has been cancelled due to lack of interest. Those of you who signed up. Thank you. You will be receiving a refund.

2026 Block of the Month
|
The accuquilt dies for this month will be available to use during our 6:00 social time. Fabric your need for the 8" block is: Light fabric-4 x 12, Medium Fabric 5 1/2" square and dark fabric is 5 1/2 by 11". Block is called Brave New World
|

She began sewing doll clothes with her grandmother when she was
about eight and has been sewing ever since. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics Education
which included classes in garment construction, fabric characteristics and color selection. She began
quilting when she retired a few years ago. A Florida friend introduced her to Laura Heine’s collage
quilting. She took her first collage class with Laura Heine at Flash Sew & Quilt in Naples, FL in 2023. She
was inspired to become a Certified instructor.

I have taught quilting for more than twenty years and love and teaching and exploring with students as much as the creating. I have been lucky to have quilts and fiber art pieces juried into shows with Missouri Fiber Artists, the American Quilter’s Society in Kentucky and the International Quilt Association in Houston as well as many local and regional shows and displays.

This class is sold out. However, there is a member who has purchased a ticket that connot attend. If you would like to purchase her ticket and attend, please contact Kimberly for more information. Our class in February is being taught by advanced certified Laura Heine instructor, Rebecca Eyer. Also please take note of the supply list items needed for this class. You will need also a small iron space at your table. THIS IS NOT A SEWING CLASS. You will not need your sewing machine in the class. You will be building your collage. Rebecca is focusing on the teeny collage pattern group #5, but you may choose another of the teeny collage patterns for the class. You will be required to purchase your own pattern for the class. Sewing Expo
|
The original Sewing and Quilt Expo is coming March 19-21. Our guild sponsors a booth at the expo and give us an opportunity to share our guild information with the attendees. In February there will be sign up opportunity. The Expo has changed some of their policies and is now offering only 4 free spots daily for our booth. This means that you are signing up to volunteer for roughly a four hour shift. This volunteer opportunity allows free parking and entry into the exhibit hall. Please consider volunteering. The sewing Expo is also asking for volunteers through their ambassador program.

Remember that our guild challenge is due in July. This year we are trying something different. The challenge: make something patriotic, any size, and we will vote on it at the July meeting.
